South Africa
The Banyana Banyana (the girls), as they are affectionately known, have fought hard to achieve their first ever trip to a World Cup. Coming out as runners up to Nigeria after a gruelling campaign through the African Cup of Nations, some big wins in the tournament led to a break out performance for the South Africans. Their style of breakneck speed and direct passing works perfectly, only due to their players who compliment this style seamlessly.
An experienced if not ageing defence will have to be excellent if they are to defend ruthless and deliberate attacks from Germany and China. A recent draw against fellow World Cup hopefuls Jamaica was indicative of the mountain they must climb to be competitive in France. An upcoming friendly against the USA may also be a sobering reality check for South Africa. With that said, their first game against Spain will be a great fixture filled with flair and frenetic pace which will surely be one not to miss for the casual viewer.
PREDICTION: Group: 4th Overall: Out
Fact: South African football officials were apparently so sure that their women’s team would not make the final of the 2018 Cup of Nations that they decided to offer a financial reward which exceeded what they had at their disposal. South Africa managed to make the final off the back of an inspiring tournament, however the money was not paid to them in full immediately. Captain Janine Van Wyk noted they “had not been paid in full” although their “outstanding payments will be paid real soon”. Hopefully they followed through, and I also hope the association do not underestimate the Banyana Banyana this time around.
