Group B - Spain

Matt Bass

Spain

Spain are a team who have had to overcome adversity and hardship in order to put forward a solid squad who will now be competing at their second World Cup in a row. Whether or not they have the quality to compete with the likes of Germany is up for debate, however the resolve of the men and women who have fought for the Women’s national team ever since the dictatorship of 1970s cannot be questioned. From that tyranny, Spain have moulded themselves into a team who have now qualified for the 2019 World Cup after having a flawless record in their group with eight wins in eight games.

Whilst their male counterparts can consider their past two tournaments failures by their standards, the women are flying higher than ever and are in an excellent position to progress from this group. Spain recently scored a monumental victory over the admittedly underperforming Brazilian squad, as well as outplaying the stronger England in an unlucky loss. With roots in a country where football is male dominated, like most others, selfish dictators and jealous matriarchs can no longer hold La Roja down.

PREDICTION: Group: 2nd Overall: Round of 16

Fact: One of the most famous clubs in Spain, Athletic Bilbao had an attendance record this season of 48,121. The record was not set by their men however, rather in a women’s cup match between Bilbao and Atletico Madrid in the Copa de la Reina (the Queen’s Cup). A monumental occasion for Women’s football in Spain, set in January of the same year that the National team is set to make a big impact in France.
