Group D - Scotland

Scotland

Scotland fought hard in a tough qualification battle in order to earn their place at their first ever World Cup tournament. Since the Scottish compete as a part of Great Britain at the Olympics, this will be their first ever international tournament and what a journey it has been to get there. A wild start to a heartbreaking 2-1 victory at home to Switzerland (where a victory of 2 goals or more seemed to be required at the time) saw two excellent goals scored with pace, precision and energy.

If the Scottish team can replicate that kind of play style at this tournament against the typically slower build-up of Japan and England, then they may just shock the system. Arguably the most accomplished team left to have never played at a World Cup, Scotland’s national team is filled with talent which mainly feature in the WSL 1 in England. A recent pair of fixtures against Chile and Brazil featured a draw and a win respectively, showing they can match it with other World Cup nations, however they will certainly need to sure up what seemed to be a reasonably loose defence. Nonetheless, with a great mix of youth and experience and a superb understanding of each other’s high press and fast build-up play style, Scotland are a dangerous squad primed for this tournament in France.
