Group E - Cameroon

Matt Bass

Cameroon

It’s very difficult to rate the African teams due to their large periods of inactivity and their tendency to not play world class teams, however, Cameroon could well be the best of the bunch. After a monumental upset victory against Sweden in the group stage in 2015, Cameroon went through to the knockout stage in second place before a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to China. An excellent performance in the 2018 African Cup of nations saw a third place finish where their only loss was in a penalty shootout to eventual winners Nigeria.

With Cameroon having good recent form against African nations, they will be a bit of a mystery for their three opponents in this group due to relative dormancy over the past six months. However, a strong showing against Croatia and China in the recent Wuhan International Tournament shows that they can perform against a diverse range of opponents. If they can achieve an upset victory against Canada, The Netherlands or New Zealand, then they might just sneak into the Round of 16 once again.

PREDICTION: Prediction: 3rd Overall: Out

Fact: Cameroon are currently on an eclectic list of former Women’s World Cup nations that have never been knocked out of the Group Stage. This list currently includes Cameroon, Chinese Taipei, China, England, Germany, Netherlands, Russia, Switzerland and the United States, with six of these nations at risk of falling off the list in France. There are also three new nations that can potentially find their way onto this list, Chile, Scotland and South Africa.
