Group F - Chile

Matt Bass

Chile

After having the pleasure of watching Chile play once live on the field and once on the television, both against the mighty Matildas, we can draw this conclusion: When playing with the breakneck scintillating pace made famous by many past Chilean national sides, they can beat any nation in the world. However, if they choose to sheepishly sit back and try to neutralise opposing attacks after they have already started, they will be punished. It is no coincidence that the Matildas were making mistakes on home soil against Chile, resulting in the Green and Gold’s first home loss since 2014. It was constant nagging and pressure from the Chileans that brought their three goals about. However, a lacklustre and lethargic display from Chile in Newcastle led to a disappointing performance in a 5-0 drubbing which became hard to watch towards the end. A superb qualifying campaign saw Chile defeat fierce rivals and neighbours Argentina 4-0 in a result which punched their ticket to their first ever World Cup. A proud footballing nation often overshadowed by a men’s side who failed to qualify for the recent World Cup tournament in Russia, Chile will be hoping to step up and show the world what they can do.
