USA
This whole article started with the team that I believe will win this tournament and will finish with the best team in women’s football history and the team that has a great chance of winning every tournament they enter: The United States Women’s National Team. What a pedigree they have, only losing twice since March of 2017, once against an inspired Matilda’s squad and more recently in January of this year against 2019 World Cup hosts France. A totally complete squad whichever way you look at it, the USA can pass teams to death, strike rapidly on the counter or play direct to their forwards and damage teams that way, it really is their choice how they beat you.
A three woman leadership team brings an incredible amount of big tournament experience with them, and with such a huge talent pool to choose from, the rest of the American players will be primed for the big stage. With a squad that is so comprehensive, opposing nations will have to alter their game plan in order to have a slight hope against the mighty stars and stripes. Speaking of those nations, Thailand and Chile will be having nightmares about coming up against such a dominant force so early in the tournament. If the USA can dispose of their Group F opposition handily and navigate their Round of 16 fixture, then a battle with the French hosts awaits them in the quarter final, a Grand Final quality bout. If the USWNT can weather that storm then they’re staring straight down the path of a fourth World Cup victory.
PREDICTION: Group: 1st Overall: Quarter Final
Fact: For some reason I am totally obsessed with the Unofficial Football World Championship and the same goes for the women’s iteration (WUFWC). The WUFWC has been contested since the European Cup in 1969 and has been passed around in a boxing style tournament where each match contests the title to a finish, where a draw means retention. Since its implementation when Italy were the inaugural winners, there have been 21 champions spread between Asia, Europe and the Americas. Whilst the Matildas held the title once in the 2014 Asian Cup and never successfully defended it, the USA will carry the title into the World Cup as the most successful team in WUFWC history with over 160 wins. Can they Carry the title all of the way through the tournament to the final?
