My name is Matt and I am not a writer. You’ll probably figure that out for yourself, although hopefully my passion and admiration for the men and women involved in football worldwide will be enough to keep you reading. I am a hopeless football fanatic and it has made every single day exciting knowing that I could come home and work on this piece, learning more about the brave and talented footballers who will be contending for footballs biggest prize. It is a privilege to share this with you.

The most common question I have received regarding my project was “why are you writing this?” The answer is I want as many people as possible to share a part of my passion for the upcoming tournament. If even one person gains an interest in women’s football because they read this, I’ll be ecstatic.

As for the best part, my opinions, or “predictions”, remember one thing: I am only guessing. If I knew what the results were going to be in the tournament, I would not write this, I would instead be making a lot of money. One of the most spectacular things about football is its unpredictability. There are 24 teams competing for this trophy and I refuse to rule one out.

Thank you all for reading, if you wish to contact me regarding my thoughts or for any other reason, I would love to keep the conversation going regarding the tournament. You can find me here:

CREDITS

Thank you to my mum, Margaret, for tirelessly editing my work even though my writing can often be very chaotic. I also emailed her almost every day for the past few weeks with updates, new paragraphs and new ideas which she edited constantly. Thanks Mum (if there are any mistakes contact her)

To my girlfriend Mackenzie, for driving to Newcastle with me to watch the Matilda’s compete with Chile as well as joining me on all of my road trips to watch games all over Sydney, thank you. On top of that, the amount of nights you’ve had to sit next to me tapping away on my keyboard rather than doing anything remotely entertaining would have been tough to endure. Sorry the sentences are too long, I tried my best…

My sister Alisha, who helped to ‘clean up’ and distribute this piece, thank you, however your influence does not end there. Not long after the conclusion of this World Cup, you will be back in Sydney with your little brother, who has missed you almost as much as he has admired you for your perseverance and ability over the course of your lifetime. After watching you play football (or “soccer”) for five years at the University of Wyoming, your talent really shone through, you truly are a champion to me. Here’s hoping that your football journey doesn’t end here, however if it does, you have at least inspired one person to write one piece about the women in world football kicking ass.

And lastly, most important of all, thank you to all of you reading. If you’ve made it this far you’ve made my day. If you’re interested, keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming piece where I go into more detail about some of the best players from each team at the World Cup. Cheers!

Matt
